Yes, blogging, or content marketing as it is now being called in some circles, is great for business.

But here are two great examples of why you must blog for reasons other than business, although both of these have potential to add residual income.

One of them is a personal victory. My older daughter, Kalai had resisted my insistence that she would make a great blogger, and would find a following, for her quirky style and love of fashion. She is studying counselling and has developed a fascination for how women and what they feel about their appearance, affects their sense of wellbeing.

At the beginning of May, she came up with the idea for a blog which covered both bases, style and esteem. She choose Style Your Esteem as her domain name, and I installed a properly optimised WordPress website for her. She posted her first blog on May 2, 2011.

It is fair to tell you that she is, as most of her generation are, an avid user of Facebook and to some extent her early traffic has come through those connections. But not all, by any means. In less then three weeks, she has made connections with women in the UK, Australia and Germany. Some have written poignant messages of how they perceive they look and how it affects their sense of worth.

A recent blog in which she spoke of her greatest fear, has elicited an extraordinary response for such a new site. It is not only the response she is getting and the connections she is making, but how it is affecting her. Her passion for fashion is sharpening. Her desire to help is growing. While it is early days, I am certain that Style Your Esteem will grow in stature very quickly and that this will, in turn, open doors she could not have imagined before. Exactly the reasons why YOU must blog!

I met Soozey Johnstone, chair of Business3000 Melbourne, last year after a networking lunch at which she was the guest speaker. She spoke so eloquently and with so much passion about the joys of successful networking, I asked her after the lunch if she had a blog. She didn’t, but conceded it had been on her mind to do so. We had several lovely, long cafe meetings together, talking about mostly everything but business, as you do when you meet someone so vivacious and full of life as Soozey.

Ten days ago we put up her first blog, My Greek Aunties. It is barely born, but today she wrote with great excitement that she had had her first comments.

One of those who commented, Dimitri wrote: p.s. I can just see the movie… a cross between Mama Mia and Eat Pray Love… Now that might be considered a fair leap for a ten day old blog. But maybe not.

I suggest you follow this delightful narrative about fabulous Greece and its warm, passionate inhabitants to find out.

Both these blogs have been constructed on WordPress using the Thesis design framework which makes creating a professional look and feel quite simple. Both are search engine optimised and showing promising results already.

Once there is a body of optimised content on both, the response should be exponential. When you have a lot of targeted traffic, joint venture opportunities and other means to monetize become evident. The process is in some part organic, but is as always, premised on good quality content and, as in these cases, content laced with a good dose of passionate interest.

PS. If you want a blog like this, keep in touch. My new product, Site Build Formula, which will help you build just such a blog in a very short time will be launched during June 2011.
